The NEED

Throughout Crown Point, there is a growing concern that the once pedestrian-friendly community in which many generations enjoyed has fallen victim to shortsighted development plans and an overall lack of planning.  CPSP has formed to help alleviate this slide, and get Crown Point back on track towards accommodating ALL types of transportation in the city.

To this end, the CPSP has identified 18 chief concerns that need to be seriously addressed in order to foster a true non-motorized environment in Crown Point.  They are broken down into four main categories - trails, sideways, biking and safe routes to school which include the following action items:

Trails:

  1. Speed up development and construction of Penn-Erie Trail from 93rd to Summit.
  2. Promote city support of Lake County’s Veterans Trail project.
  3. Advocate and promote city support and construction of Pennsy Greenway link.
  4. PRESERVE Winfield Trail Corridor.
  5. Start mandating donation of property for planned trails within proposed subdivisions.
  6. Identify new trail corridors (utility lines, streams).
  7. Help organize trail clean-up days when systems are completed.

Sidewalks:

   8.  Create citywide Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that
takes in regular maintenance and repairs of
        city sidewalks.
   9.  Determination of sidewalk repair and maintenance
        responsibility.
  10. Start mandating sidewalks on arterials into new
        subdivisions.

  11. Advocate bulb-outs on the Square to increase ped safety.

Biking:

  12.  Determine streets with adequate room to paint
        bike lanes upon.

  13.  Sign city street bike routes – provide wayfinding to
        city points
of destination (Square, Fairgrounds).
  14.  Promote the installation of bike racks at civic
        locations.

  15.  Provide bike “rodeos” or other exhibitions teaching
safe biking skills to younger riders.

  16.  Organize casual rides.

Safe Routes to School:

  17. Work with city and school districts to promote more
        biking and walking to schools.

  18. Organize “walking busses” or similar events.

Although CPSP does not expect the city to act on all of these at once, we intend to keep these issues on the forefront of their planning decisions so they will begin to recognize and respect the need in the city.
